Cut Off War Funding, Banjo Lane and American Freedoms in a Era of Legal Torture

Dear Senator Smith,

CUT OFF FUNDING TO THE WAR IN IRAQ!!

I support cutting off funding to President Bush’s latest war expansion plans. He means to escalate the war to a point where he will have an excuse to invade Iran, which could well lead to another World War.

America cannot afford to finance this expansion. Do not drain our Social Security fund!

We should be using our tax money to solve our own internal problems! We should have national health insurance; we should be building low-income housing; we should be fully funding our public schools; we should be funding a comprehensive program to switch over to renewable energy sources, so that we do not need Iraqi and Iranian oil!

America is in grave danger from an arrogant administration which believes it can ignore the will of the people. Please have the courage to oppose it! Thank you.

Sincerely,

Brooke S. Clement

American Freedom

American Freedom rests on the individual’s right to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness - as laid out in our Declaration of Independence from the colonial empire of the Kingdom of Great Britain.

Our government itself is designed with checks and balances between the three branches:

1. Congress - to make laws, control revenue and expenditures, raise the military, declare war.
2. Executive - to command those armies, arrange treaties which must be ratified by the Senate, appoint ambassadors, ministers, and Supreme Court judges, and in general oversee the execution of federal laws, responsibilities, and foreign affairs.
3. Judicial - to resolve disputes, usually by jury, and to guarantee that the Constitution and current laws are upheld.

The right of the individual to be protected from erratic or unwarranted actions of the government is enshrined in our Bill of Rights:

1. You have the freedom of religion, speech, assembly, and the right to petition the government.
2. You have the right to keep and bear arms.
3. No soldiers are to be quartered in your house unless at war and Congress passes a law.
4. There will be no search or seizure of people, property, or effects without probable cause.
5. There will be no incarceration without indictment (except during war); no duplicate trials for the same crime; you cannot be forced to incriminate yourself; you cannot be deprived of life, liberty, or property without due process of law; your property cannot be taken for public use without just compensation.
6. If criminally prosecuted, you have the right to a speedy and public trial by jury; you will be informed of the charges against you; you can confront the witnesses against you; you have the right to legal counsel.
7. In property lawsuits you have the right to trial by jury, without duplicate trials for the same issue.
8. You are free from excessive bail, excessive fines, and cruel and unusual punishment.
9. All rights not entrusted in the government by the Constitution belong to the people.
10. All powers not given to the Federal government by the Constitution belong to the States or to the people (unless expressly prohibited by the Constitution).

Other notable amendments are:

13. No slavery except as punishment for a crime for which you were duly convicted (1865).

14. Equal protection under law for all citizens, native or naturalized (1868).

15. All (male) citizens have a right to vote regardless of race, color, or prior slavery (1870).

16. Federal income tax instituted (1913).

18. Intoxicating liquors prohibited (1919 - repealed 1933).

19. Women granted the vote (1920).

22. Presidents are limited to two terms in office (1947).

24. You don’t have to pay a special tax in order to vote (1964).

26. 18 year olds get to vote (1971).

American Freedom is not based on torture, incognito detention, conviction by hearsay, or search and seizure without probable cause.

If you love American Freedom, then oppose these abuses, and oppose the Clinton-esque military exercises in U.S. cities.
