Through sojourns into Japan, China, Mexico, and the Philippines spanning her early childhood, and into her extended education in the United States, the reader is constantly treated to exciting, informative and insightful accounts of Portia's travels. In addition, one cannot help but to be impressed by noting the growth and development of the child-turned -woman as an "observer extraordinaire". The reader senses early on, even before her marriage to Bill Foster who was at that time with the American Friends' Service Committee, that her life would be centered around her core values as an activist for social justice and environmental concerns -- always woven within the fabric of her firm faith in God. This autobiography searches out and clarifies a myriad of conflicts, triumphs, disappointments, solutions and diverse situations too complex to describe herein... they do suggest attentive reading by those who seek a model for courageous and persistent efforts to make the world a better place.
