Summer at Grandma's

by Edie Self

from the book
100 of the World's Most Beautiful Paintings
, 1966, published by R.T.V. Sales

Our little writers' group is having a lot of fun with an exercise that challenges all of us to create a piece incorporating words contributed by each. The first batch of stories and essays was so delightful we decided to do it again. This time the words came up:

light / bedtime / thankful / birdsong / grandchildren

When I sat down to play with this puzzle, I wrote only a few words before recognizing this was to be a puzzle of very few pieces. In short--haiku. The first one* fell together so sweetly; but then, I thought, could I do it again? Here's what happened:

Summer at Grandma's

* It's bedtime. Thankful,
grandchildren hark birdsong.
Sweet light lingers late.

Early light. Birdsong
wakes grandchildren. Big day, then
thankful it's bedtime.

Thankful for noon light,
grandchildren hear sweet birdsong;
know it's bedtime--NOT!

It's bedtime. Birdsong
fills the evening light. Thankful,
I kiss grandchildren.

Birdsong lullaby.
Thankful for my grandchildren.
Late light--it's bedtime.
