Landscape with Stars (detail) by Herni-Edmond Cross, from
Art & Wonder, An Illustrated Anthology of Visionary Poetry, Edited by Kate Farrell, Metropolitan Museum of Art, N.Y., A Bullfinch Press Book/Little Brown and Co., 1996
Poem for Patricia

The last gift of the dead
is to whisper to the living:
It is so
short.
This time of being alive and
embodied -- it will
not last. It will
not last.
The coolness of morning
in the garden, the roses
in their fullness.
The eating of ripe cherries,
the old heartbreaks,
the giggling and striving,
and stroking the soft, soft
geranium leaves.
It will not
last. And
then they laugh, dancing
away,
down the Milky path of stars
to mystery.
